Sister Of Firefighter Killed On 9/11 To Sleep At WTC Site In Protest
POSTED: 8:53 pm EST March 8, 2006
UPDATED: 8:14 am EST March 9, 2006
NEW YORK -- The sister of a firefighter killed in the Sept. 11 terrorist
attacks on Wednesday said she would sleep on a sidewalk across from ground
zero indefinitely to protest plans for the World Trade Center memorial,
which she calls offensive because part of it would be underground.
"I will be here every night from this night forward until the underground
memorial issue is resolved," Rosaleen Tallon said.
Tallon, sister of Sean Tallon, and the Rev. Bill Minson, a former ground
zero chaplain who counsels Sept. 11 families, went to the offices of the
Lower Manhattan Development Corp. with about a dozen other family members
to ask the rebuilding agency to change its plans.
The families received a handwritten note from LMDC president Stefan Pryor
announcing that plans would go as scheduled. Construction on the
"Reflecting Absence" memorial is scheduled to begin within weeks. Families
have said the design dishonors the dead and is not safe for visitors
because the memorial would be partially underground.
In a letter to families last week, Pryor said the agency had responded to
other family requests for design changes, made its final choices "in good
faith" and would proceed with construction.
Minson said he would remain at the site 24 hours a day "until there's a
change" in the memorial plans. Tallon said she would sleep every night in
front of her brother's firehouse, Engine Co. 10/Ladder Co. 10, using a
sleeping bag and his cold-weather gear from when he was a Marine. She
showed up just before 11 p.m. Wednesday to begin her first night.
Police said someone who sleeps on a sidewalk could be arrested for
loitering
